Why a single monitoring location gives you false downtime alerts

A single vantage point causes false downtime alerts. Here is how multi-region confirmation fixes flapping and false pages.

If your monitoring tool has ever paged you at 2 a.m. for a site that was never actually down, you have met the single biggest cause of false downtime alerts: checking from one place.

Why one location lies to you

A monitoring check is just a request from a server somewhere on the internet to your site. If that one server cannot reach your site, the check fails and you get an alert. But "one server could not reach your site" is not the same as "your site is down."

The path between any two points on the internet crosses dozens of networks. At any moment, one of those networks can drop packets, a route can flap, or a peering link can saturate for a few seconds. Your site is fine. The visitor in another region is fine. But the one server running your check happened to sit on the wrong side of a brief hiccup, so it recorded a failure.

Check from a single location often enough and you will eventually catch one of these blips. The result is a "flapping" monitor: down, then up, then down again, firing an alert every time. After a few false pages, people mute the alerts, and a muted alert cannot warn you when something is genuinely broken.

What multi-region confirmation does

The fix is to ask more than one question before declaring an outage. Instead of trusting a single failed check, a monitor re-checks from several regions around the world and takes a vote.

  • If only one region sees a failure, it is almost certainly a local network blip. The result is suppressed and you are not alerted.
  • If the failure shows up across regions, the problem is real and reproducible. The incident opens and your alerts fire.

This is the difference between "a server had a bad second" and "your site is unreachable for your users." Only the second one deserves a notification.
